Muadh ibn Jabal (RA) said:

Study knowledge, for learning it for the sake of Allah is truly fearing Him. Seeking it is worship, revising it is Glorification of Allah, searching for it is a type of Jihad, teaching it to those who do not know it is a charity, and giving it to those who deserve it; is a means of drawing near to Allah.

For knowledge sets the milestones for what is halal and haram, it is an illuminating light to the path of paradise, a comforter in times of loneliness, the one who will speak to you when you are lonely, a companion in times of seclusion, the one who will guide in times of hardship and ease, a weapon against one’s enemies, a relative among the strangers, and the best with the closest of friends.

Allah raises (in status) nations by it, making them leaders of goodness, whose guidance and paths are to be followed, those whose actions are looked to and imitated and with whom the final opinion will rest with.

Abu Moosa Al-Ash’ari a true lover of the Qur’an…

Abu alMuhallab said: “I heard Abu Moosa on his minbar saying, ‘Whoever is granted knowledge by Allah, let him teach it,  but let him not speak of that of which he has no knowledge, lest he become one of those who overstep the mark and go beyond the bounds of Islam.”

Ibn Shawdhab said: “When Abu Moosa had prayed Fajr he would turn to face the rows, checking their recitation one by one.”

It is narrated that Anas ibn Malik said: “Al-Ash’ari sent me to ‘Umar RA and ‘Umar asked, ‘How did you leave Al-Ash’ari?’ I said, ‘I left him teaching the people the Qur’an.’ He said, ‘He is very smart, but do not tell him.’”

He was a deeply rooted with the Qur’an, learning, teaching, leading the people with it. May Allah have mercy on his soul.

Yet he commands others to it..

The poet said:

The one who lacks Taqwa, yet commands the people to it. Is like a doctor who treats the people yet he himself is sick!

‘Wait until I am aware if preference is in my silence or answering.’

Imam As-Sha’fi was once sitting in one of his gatherings of knowledge. When a questioner came to him, inquiring about a religious ruling. At this Imam Shaf’i was silent. The questioner asked saying: ‘Will you not answer?’ Yet Imam As-Shaf’i remained in silence. So the questioner thereupon said: ‘Will you not answer? May Allah have mercy upon you.’ Here Imam As-Shaf’i responded: ‘Wait until I am aware if preference is in my silence or answering.’

Heaven or Hell..?

Ibrahim al-taymi said: “I imagined myself in Paradise, eating of its fruits, drinking of its beverages and embracing my young beautiful wives.” Then I imagined myself in Hell, eating of its poisonous plants, drinking boiling water and wrestling in my chains. I said to myself: “Which of the two do you prefer?” The answer was: “I want to go back and preform good deeds,” I said: “You can do so, because this is just an imagination.”

By Allah, if I had nothing but a small ant, I would fight you with it…

When Qurasyh broke the treaty of al-Hudaybiyah, they were afraid of the danger they faced from Madeenah, so they sent Abu Sufyaan to renew the treaty and increase its duration. He came to the Messenger of Allah (SAW) and met his daughter Umm Habeebah (RA) at her house, but to no avail. He went to the Messenger of Allah (SAW) and spoke to him, but he did not answer him. Then he went to Abu Bakr and asked him to speak to the Messenger of Allah (SAW) on his behalf, but he said, “I will not do it.” Then he went to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab and spoke to him. He said: ”Should I intercede for you with the Messenger of Allah (SAW)? By Allah, if I had nothing but a small ant, I would fight you with it.

The most dangerous creation of any society…

“The most dangerous creation of any society is the man who has nothing to lose,” wrote James Baldwin in The Fire Next Time. “You do not need 10 such men. Only one will do.”

Fajr and Isha in jama’ah‏

It is reported that Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: “If we did not see a person at fajr and ‘isha’ prayers, we would think badly of him.” (Reported by al-Tabaraani)
