كان نقش خاتم عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه : كفى بالموت واعظاً ياعمر
“The engraving on ‘Umar ibn al Khataab’s(Ra) ring was: “Sufficient is death as an admonisher O Umar”.

or starters, for those who can read Arabic, I highly recommend reading this by Abu Fihr al-Salafi. He has alot of excellent advices about Talab in general and programs of study for specific fields. The only disclaimer: his advice on what to study for Fiqh and Usul is not very good and I’m unimpressed with it, but otherwise, his recommendations are very good, particularly his recommendations on Aqidah.

بم أدركت العلم ؟ قال : أدركت العلم بلسان سؤول ،وقلب عقول ، وبدن غير ملول
Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما was asked:
How did you gain your knowledge?
He said: I gained it with an inquisitive tongue, an understanding heart, and a body that does not tire.
sharh riyadus al-saaliheen shaykh Uthameen
‘Umar رضي الله عنهما said of him:
فقال لهم : ذاكم فتى الكهول له لسان سؤول وقلب عقول
This is for you a mature(with regards to his understanding of the deen) young boy, who has an inquisitive tongue, and an understanding heart.
Usool al-Tafseer shaykh Uthaymeen
And Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما said of himself:
قال ابن عباس: ذللت طالباً فعززت مطلوباً
I was lowered in my pursuit of knowledge.
So I became esteemed, when I was pursued.

فنسيان ذكر الله مـــــوت قـــــلوبهم وأجـسامهم قـبل الـقبور قبور .
وأرواحهم في وحشة من جسومهم وليس لهم حتى النشور نشور
Their bodies are graves before the eventual grave
Their souls are in solitude away from their bodies
And they will not be resurrected (their bodies or souls) until the Day of resurrection (i.e. Judgement day)
