كتب عمر لرجل من بني أسلم كتابًا يستعمله به، فدخل الرجل على عمر وبعض أولاد عمر على حجر أبيهم يقبلهم، فقال الرجل: تفعل هذا يا أمير المؤمنين؟ فوالله ما قبلت ولدًا لي قط، فقال عمر: أنت والله
بالناس أقل رحمة، لا تعمل لي عملاً، ورَدَّه عمر فلم يستعمله
Umar wrote to a man from Banu Aslam appointing him to some position of authority. The man entered to meet Umar and saw him playing with his children on his lap and kissing them. The man said, “O Ameer al-Mu’mineen you do this?” By Allah, I have never kissed any child of mine.” Umar said, “Then by Allah you are the least meriful of people. You will never do any work for me.” So Umar rejected him and do not appoint him.
