When Umar (رضي الله عنه) offered governorship to Zubair ibn Al-Awwaam saying, ‘O’ Abu Abdullah would you like to be the governor of Egypt?’ He replied, ‘I have no need in that (rather what would please me) is to go out as a mujahid and to serve as a helper for the muslims.’
Futooh al-Buldan and also found in as-Sallaabee’s biography of Umar (رضي الله عنه)
What is particularly beautiful about this quote is that Zubair (رضي الله عنه) did not say this out of pride, which we know by the Rasool (صلى الله عليه و سلم) testifying to his place in Jannah and is further cemented in Allah taking him as a shaheed.
These were the best of men not merely because of beautified speech, rather due to their excellent actions in times of need. Allah have mercy on them all.
