‏قال ابن الجوزي رحمه الله :

‏وقوع الذنب على القلب كوقوع الدهن على الثوب ، إن لم تعجل غسله وإلا انبسط

Ibn al-Jawzi رحمة الله عليه said:

Sinning on the heart is like the dropping of grease onto clothes. If it is not washed (with istighfar and righteous actions) it will spread.
