Smoothies for Suhoor (with Dates)

1. Best dates to use for smoothies are Medjool, de pitted and sliced
2. Soak dates in milk/water for few hours before use
3. Substitute yogurt and milk interchangeably if desired.
4. Skim milk/ Low fat blends better
5. Add oat bran, almonds, flaxseeds(linseed) etc for a healthier and energising kick
6. Freezing the fruit before blending will provide a creamier texture

Vanilla-Date Breakfast Smoothie
• 1 cup yogurt
• 1 cup milk
• 4-7 dates soaked in the milk overnight
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 2 cups ice cubes- optional
Blend. 2-3 Glasses

Simple Banana Oat bran smoothie
• 1 ½ cup milk,
• 1 Tb oat bran,
• 1 Banana,
• 4 dates soaked in the milk overnight
• Vanilla to taste – optional

Banana – Date Smoothie
• 250 ml plain yogurt
• 120 ml milk,
• 120 ml dates, fresh, pitted and chopped and soaked overnight in the Milk

Common mistakes in Ramadhan:

1. Drinking “vimto” on a daily basis

– Why: It contains high amounts of sugar, additives and colarants
– Solution: If you have to, drink it twice a week maximum

2. Drinking large amounts of water at iftaar time

– Why: Filling the stomach with water is more strenuous to it than with food.
– Solution: have a few sips at iftaar then a glass after every two hours.

3. Exercising directly after iftaar.

– Why: the body’s blood flow is concentrated around the stomach at that time.
– Solution: Exercise after two hours of eating to ease digestion.

4. Chewing and swallowing food fast.

– Why: chewing food slowly can speed up digestion and help maintain your weight

5. Having dessert directly after iftaar

– Why: they make you drowsy and sleepy
– Solution: leave at least a two hour gap between iftaar and dessert to stay fresh and awake for ishaa and taraweeh prayers

6. Consuming foods with high amounts of sodium

– Why: Sodium triggers thirst through out the fasting hours of the day
– Solution: instead, eat foods that are high in potassium, they retain water and supress your thirst.

My mother was not able to walk for twenty years so she said to me one day: ‘Go to Ahmad bin Hanbal and ask him to pray for me‘. So I went to him while he was in a dark room. 

He said, ‘Who is there?’ 

I said, ‘A man whose mother cannot walk and asked you for du’a.’ 

I heard an angry voice and he said, ‘We are more in need that you make du’a to Allah for us.’ 

When I left, an old woman came out and said: ‘I left him [i.e. Ahmad] and he was making du’a for her.’

I returned home and knocked the door and my mother came out walking.

Ramdhaan: Are you Physically Prepared?

Fasting is a great act of worship, yet sometimes we neglect to physically prepare which leads us to become physically weak thus undermining other acts of worship that can be achieved during the night & day.

Not only is eating wisely tricky, so is fasting wisely. Here are some strategies that have been compiled by people of extensive medical background as to make the fast less strenuous upon our bodies so that we may utilise our energy to the maximum in devotion to Allah, the Most Exalted.

Lots of Water: Most healthy adults can survive well over a month without eating. Most of the unpleasantness in ones breath associated with a fast does not come from lack of food, but rather, from lack of fluid. The solution therefore is to super-hydrate beforehand. Drink a great deal the prior evening, approximately 2.5 litres. Before the fast is over, you will be glad you did it.

Food: Though you should drink a lot before a fast, do not stuff yourself with food. Eat a normal meal but emphasize carbohydrates like potato/pasta or rice dishes, not huge amount of proteins or fats. Carbohydrates bond with water which your body can “drink” when it needs to during the fast. Proteins do not. Most of the dramatic but limited weight loss that people on high protein diets experience is, lost water that protein molecules cannot hold onto or bring into your system, water that you want around during a fast. Some people seem to think that they can “make up for” not eating by having a big pre-dawn meal. This is a very bad idea, and actually makes it harder to fast. Have you ever noticed how you feel particularly hungry the morning after a large meal? Eat a normal sized meal. Keep in mind the “hunger” that you feel at meal times is simply a result of your body preparing itself to receive food at the expected time. If you always eat lunch at precisely 12:30 and dinner at precisely 6pm, your body will start preparing to digest at those times. That is what we think of as “hunger.” If you vary your meal schedule & decrease at least 1 meal before the commencement of Ramadhaan, you will find that this eases your feelings of hunger at meal times.

After the fast, be careful not to over eat! Since the body protects itself from starvation when you are not eating, by slowing down the rate at which it burns food, the calories you take on right after a fast will stay with you a lot longer than those acquired when your metabolism is once again functioning at full speed. So prepare yourself for fasting, both physically and spiritually.

Reduce coffee/tea: The nausea and headaches that many people report during a fast have nothing to do either with food or drink. They are usually the result of caffeine/nicotine withdrawal. If you are a heavy coffee/tea or cola drinker, start tapering off a week or so before the fast.

Nuts and Rasins: Nuts and rasins are foods that enhance levels of energy. In addition, some of the scholars have mentioned that they also increase the memory, as does honey and chewing certain kinds of gum resin. Imaam al-Zuhri said: “You should eat honey because it is good for the memory.” He also said: “Whoever wants to memorize hadeeth should eat raisins.” Imam Ibraaheem said, “You should chew resin gum, because it gives energy to the heart and gets rid of forgetfulness.” (From al-Jaami’ by al-Khateeb, 2/394-397). As they also mentioned, too much acidic food is one of the causes of laziness and weak memory.

A highly recommended advice by a Muslim homeopath, 1 table spoon of crushed poppy seeds with 1 table spoon of crushed almonds mixed in a glass of milk at the pre-dawn meal, is sure to give you a great deal of slow releasing energy! Be sure to have it, even if it means that this is the only thing that you have! Try this once & you will be sure never to miss it!

And worship your Lord until there comes unto you the certainty (i.e. death). (Al-Hijr 15:99)

Every child has a varying amount of fear; some are normal fears of childhood while others are not. Some amount of fear in a child is understandable and healthy, like fearing the fire for it burns. Child Psychology experts say that a child in his early years may show signs of fear when hearing a sudden noise or something falling. In general, girls show more fear than boys, and the intensity of the fear may vary according to the intensity of the child’s imagination; the more imaginative the child is, the more fearful he may be. However, the child may develop fear of harmless things, like darkness, water, stairs and gathering with other people. These fears can result from a number of factors;

(a) The mother scaring the child with ideas of ghosts, shadows or strange creatures.

(b) Relating stories or fairy tales that have evil and imaginative characters in them.

(c) Raising the child in isolation and keeping him secluded – away from people.

(d) Children are imitators of their parents and pick up phobia from their parents, therefore presenting a good example before the children plays a major role in training them.

In order to avoid such fears, the parents should:
(a) Always train the child to believe in Allah, worship Him and turn to Him in all situations of fear and anxiety.

(b) Do not scare him with imaginative characters, ghosts and animals. Always remember the Hadeeth of Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam): “The strong believer is better and is more loved by Allah than the weak believer.” [Saheeh Muslim (2664)]

(c) Give the child responsibilities and allow him to work it out himself. Also, allow him to meet and mix with other people and get to know them.

(d) Instill courage and bravery in the child by relating to him true stories of our pious-predecessors.

(e) As psychologists recommend, give the child an opportunity to get to know the thing that he is frightened of, for example, if he is afraid of water, allow him to play with little water in a bowl, if the child fears the dark; the parent may allow him to play with the light-switch, turning it off and on…

Fear of Dark: Generally children shows fear when the parents separate their bed. Parents need to recognize the fact that the room looks totally different to the child when the lights are out. So, you may…

(i) Use a night light, but experiment with its placement to be sure that it does not create frightening shadows.

(ii) After the light has been turned out. Stay in the room for a few minutes and talk about how different things look. A curtain blowing in the breeze looks very different at night than it does during the daytime.

(iii) Leave the door to the child’s room slightly open and tell him that you will not be far away.

(iv) If the child awakens in the middle of the night, he should not be invited into your bed else he may develop a habit that is difficult to break!! Instead, comfort him in his own room and tell him that you are proud of him for being grown up enough to sleep in a room by himself.

Doing exercise in a gym where there is music


What is the ruling on exercising in a gym where there is music? Please note that I have advised those who are in charge but they did not act upon my advice. Now I have started to use an mp3 player whilst I am exercising.

It is not permissible to listen to music, whether in a gym or elsewhere, because of a great deal of evidence which states that it is haraam to listen to musical instruments. See the answer to question no. 5000.


The fact that there is music in the gym is an evil which must be denounced. It is not sufficient just to put on earphones to block the sound or distract oneself by listening to something permissible. Rather if denouncing it verbally does not work, there remains the option of denouncing it in one’s heart, which can only be achieved by going away from the evil and leaving the place where it is happening, so long as one is able to do that.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever among you sees an evil action, then let him change it with his hand [by taking action]; if he cannot, then with his tongue [by speaking out]; and if he cannot, then with his heart – and that is the weakest of faith.”

Narrated by Muslim (49).

The fact that it is obligatory to leave the place where evil is being committed is also indicated by the verse in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Qur’aan) that when you hear the Verses of Allaah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them. Surely, Allaah will collect the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in Hell”

[al-Nisa’ 4:140]

al-Qurtubi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The words of Allaah, “then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that” mean, something other than kufr (disbelief). “(But if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them” – this indicates that it is obligatory to avoid people of sin if they are openly committing evil, because the one who does not avoid them is approving of their deeds, and approving of kufr is also kufr. Allaah says “(but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them”, so everyone who sits in a gathering where sin is committed and does not denounce them will share the burden of sin with them.

They should be denounced if they speak of sin or commit sin; if one cannot denounce them then he should leave them so that he will not be one of those mentioned in this verse.

It was narrated that ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez caught some people who were drinking alcohol, and it was said to him that one of the people present was fasting. He had the punishment carried out on him too, and he recited this verse: “(but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them”, i.e., approval of sin is also a sin. End quote.

Al-Jassaas said in Ahkaam al-Qur’aan (2/407): This verse indicates that it is obligatory to denounce evil to the one who does it, and part of denouncing it is showing one’s dislike of it if it is not possible to remove it, and not sitting with the one who does it, and leaving him until he stops it and does something else. End quote.

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Denouncing in one’s heart is obligatory for everyone, which means hating the evil and leaving the people if one is unable to change it with one’s words or actions, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And when you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) see those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Qur’aan) by mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shaytaan (Satan) causes you to forget, then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those people who are the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers)”

[al-An’aam 6:68]

End quote from al-Durar al-Saniyyah fi’l-Ajwabah al-Najdiyyah (16/142).

To sum up, you must denounce this evil and advise those who are in charge of this gym. If they respond, then praise be to Allaah, and if they do not respond then look for another gym, and do not share in the sin.
