Imam As-Sha’fi was once sitting in one of his gatherings of knowledge. When a questioner came to him, inquiring about a religious ruling. At this Imam Shaf’i was silent. The questioner asked saying: ‘Will you not answer?’ Yet Imam As-Shaf’i remained in silence. So the questioner thereupon said: ‘Will you not answer? May Allah have mercy upon you.’ Here Imam As-Shaf’i responded: ‘Wait until I am aware if preference is in my silence or answering.’
